The Federal Aviation Administration has authorized a handful of commercial and charter carriers to use the tablet computer as a so-called electronic flight bag. Private pilots, too, are now carrying iPads, which support hundreds of general aviation apps that simplify preflight planning and assist with in-flight operations.
Airline pilots ditch paper for iPads and save millions in fuel
Doling out gadgets may seem more like a recruiting perk than a sustainability decision, but pilots have to carry up to 35 pounds of paper with them in the cockpit on each flight. Swapping out those manuals, maps, and other documents to lighten the load could add up to $1.2 million in fuel savings, according to American Airlines.
Queensland ministers will carry around secure cabinet briefings on their iPads from now on after the state government paid for the development of a new app. And the government expects other jurisdictions will want to source the brand-new Queensland software to lighten their own loads.
